childrearing Regency style   Written by Margaret H (9/26/2005 6:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Parenting skills (or lack thereof), penned by Barbara
Are you new?

As a modern parent I often shudder while reading about parenting in JA's novels and you have given a good overview of some of the problems in Persuasion - never mind the Elliot family problems. I wonder if anyone out there can recommend a good source about what was acceptable or not in child behaviour at the time. Was a certain amount of disorder expected with boys before they were sent off to school? It is hard to know who is the better or worse parent without knowing what was acceptable at the time. Personally, I would rather live in the Musgrove household!
