Lady Elliot and her settlement   Written by Emmy (9/25/2005 12:36 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, I am not so sure..., penned by Robbin
Are you new?

Yours are good points, Robbin. I had always presumed that Lady Elliot (or rather Miss Stevenson) would have had a relatively large dowry (I mean Mrs. Bennet had £5000!) since she was the daughter of a mere Mr. so therefore money would have had to have been abundant for Sir W to want to marry her. We know that she had a youthful infatuation, but what was the attraction (beyond his first qualifications, that she be beautiful) that led Sir W on?

Yet, you also say that Sir W would do nothing for his daughter (ie. settle any money upon her) in regards to her engagement to CW. Perhaps it was tied up like Mrs. Bennet's was until he died.
