I'm not sure he can be blamed for leaving. She sent him packing. He could have persisted, but would that have been polite?

Do we think that a young man should behave as Mr. Collins did and press the matter after he has heard from the lady herself.

That is what makes it so heartbreaking for Anne. She is the architect of her own misery.
