I took that 'inferior birth' statement to be Sir Walter's view of the matter. If the future baronet had chosen to marry, say, an earl's daughter or the daughter of another baronet whose title dated from the time of Charles II, it might be understandable (in Sir Walter's eyes), but beyond that nearly all women would be of 'inferior birth' to his precious Elizabeth, don't you think?
He would probably even see someone like Emma Woodhouse (not that she would have married Mr. Elliot!) as being of 'inferior birth' in comparison to Elizabeth.
