I get the impression that SW and EE were pretty pushy in issuing their invitation, and that Mr. Elliot, who had no intention of ever accepting it, only said as much as he had to to avoid a prolonged argument. Of course, this still takes a fair amount of social skill!

Maybe he didn't mind meeting them the second time because he absolutely didn't care what they thought of him one way or the other?
