but also not having more of a care for how it would affect Anne to disappoint her family...when waiting only a few years could bring the marriage about in a much more positive light.

He ran off and left her, in an adolescent huff...and let her stay there to wilt and remain lonely for 8 years.

That was not at all his finest hour, and I would go farther and say that it indicated an immaturity and weakness of character that showed him not yet worthy of a woman as gracious and selfless as Anne.
