in consequence of the missive, Mr. William Elliot, penned by Cheryl
I'm believe him to be a true gentleman. We know it was Sir Walter who "sought the acquaintance," his boorish reputation preceding him I'm sure. And I cringe at the sound of those words, "forced into the introduction." (Both quotes from Ch.1) Could be the case of a well-mannered fellow who would follow proper decorum towards his relations, would make himself pleasant.....and breathe a sigh of relief at their parting. Any well-meant kindness or attention on his part would be pounced on by Sir Walter (and subsequently Elizabeth,) as an invitation to be allied.
