Devotion to the dear departed   Written by Caroline (9/23/2005 10:45 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Oh, I'm sure JA was partly joking..., penned by Line
Are you new?

Convention or not, to be still mourning for a dead spouse is a great and effective excuse for fending off unwanted attentions- I speak from experience here. For reasons which I'd rather not go into in Pemberley, widowhood, like divorcehood, seems to attract the most unreasonable, lascivious and unwarranted overtures from all directions! The only "polite" countering to these that actually worked, in my experience, was to be "in mourning".

For this reason, I have some sympathy with Lady Russell. Sir Walter was, in all probability, not the only pratt who thought she was a sure thing!
