Showing Anne the world: A plot hole?   Written by Maisy (9/23/2005 7:55 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I was just thinking that, penned by helena6
Are you new?

]Lady Russell never seems to have either the power or the desire to make sure Anne is seen more in the wider world. So if Lady Russell was not willing or able to show Anne to the world, what made her think that anyone would see Anne in a small community with so few choices [...]

Can we suppose that Lady Russell had no inkling that Anne would end up with so few opportunies to be in a wider society? After all, Anne had been at school for 3 years, and she was but 19 at the time of her brief engagement to CW. Perhaps LR believed that Anne would accompany Sir Walter and Elizabeth on their annual London trips, and that Anne would make new acquaintances who would invite her to visit them?

But it is so baffling that LR did not take Anne anywhere (other than one trip to Bath with her). I wonder if JA would have filled in this little "plot hole" had she had the opportunity to edit the text during the publishing phase?
