I am put in mind of the difference between the Captain's life and Anne's during their separation. What a catching of the heart she must have had when reading those "navy lists and newspapers." And what of CW? Such an existence can alter a man physically, mentally, philosophically. I am in awe of JA's sublime ability to create this situation in an almost quiet corner of the story so far.
