These pauses that you highlighted and other hints.


We are learning more of Anne as the chapters proceed.It is proof of her moral backbone that her 'retrench list' is vastly stricter than Lady R had the guts to propose. Anne seems to suffer from the shame of their situation and to think that it's worth sacrifices to be able to keep your head high again. Along the lines of what her mother would have managed.
And that sigh on the garden path betrays her affectionate heart.
