and then I suppose the expectations for a son and heir became more acute. Especially in these days where inheriting the estates was mainly a male business. The family's future is at stake. So I agree, our Austen Marys are to be pitied.


I know of families where the two daughters are followed by a son and then the second daughter while still loved, tends to be no ones particular favourite. :-{
