"A willing foe and sea room" - Nelsonian Toast (Trad.)

What must it have been like to feel the destructive multiple wrecking-ball force of cannon volleys at close quarters, coupled with oak splinters, skewering all and sundry? Firing through a breach, or into crowded decks of men, they would load up with small shot and any odd ends of scrap metal. Men just as cannon fodder! Most of Jane's naval heroes (one has a limp), as well as her own brothers one of whom became an Admiral (from memory), seem to have led charmed lives in encountering such mayhem at first hand. Is it, therefore, a case of a lot of sailing and blockading, but relatively little fighting? Any naval historians out there? |
