Silent Anne   Written by Margaret 7 (9/21/2005 9:14 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Anne Chap 1-3, penned by JoAnn Elizabeth
Are you new?

What a good detail to notice. It is beneficial to note what we do NOT see, and what we do NOT hear, but often the omissions elude us.

We are three pages (my everyman's edition) into the book, before we receive any information about our heroine, and even further along before she speaks. It would be a good idea to see if Anne makes her presence more strongly felt before the book is ended. Does she change in this regard, how and to what purpose?

Judith Terry in her introduction to "Persuasion" notes that "The narrative strategy confirms her lowly status and distances her from us: it is three pages before she is any more than a name written in another book...and three chapters before we know for sure that she is the heroine." (p.vii)
