JulieW has had some scheduling crises and will not be able to participate in the GR. However, she did send me some nifty scans to post throughout the read. Here are some on livery.

When picturing Admiral Croft, Sir Walter says, "Then I take it for granted," observed Sir Walter, "that his face is about as orange as the cuffs and capes of my livery." (ch 3)

Here is some very ostentatious, and very orange, livery. Julie says

The livery was worn in the 18th and eaarly 19th century by the footmen of the Child family( bankers) of Osterley Park. (link below) I saw this suit at the Below Stairs exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 2003.



All I can say is: Ewwwww!
