Third Child Syndrome   Written by JoAnn Elizabeth (9/21/2005 8:23 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Dearest, loveliest Elizabeth, penned by Margaret 7
Are you new?

Mary Bennett and Mary Elliot, both victims of Third Child Syndrome.

Nothing to prove it of course, but I have observed several families where the father prefers one child, the mother prefers another and the third child is "no one's favorite".

I don't think Lady Elliot would have placed any of her girls in this position, but I believe Sir Walter and Lady Russell have, quite unintentionally, placed Mary there. Lucky for Mary she was able to escape through marriage.

In the Bennett family, before the arrival of Lydia, I can imagine the mother favoring Jane and the father Lizzie. So Mary was, from the beginning, no one's favorite.
