Broken Engagement--Chapter 4

in consequence of the missive, Perspectives on Lady Russell, penned by Maisy
-Giving that the facts are against Anne and CW both correctly and generally by the standards of a good match in society, I still think that LR used both facts and emotions to persuade Anne which indicates that facts were not enough to do the job. (I am changing my opinion, from that LR did not tell Anne of her personal dislike of CW, to that she did.) -Anne might have stood against her father’s ill-will (he thought of it as a degrading alliance) but is finally persuaded from her “exquisite felicity” by LR and ends up with the idea that she is “consulting his good” by breaking the engagement. I do not think LR has persuaded Anne based only on the evilness of the match itself because she might have seen that from Sir Walter if rank or money were to change her mind—Anne believes in CW, it is enough for her, she believes he will succeed in all his claims. I do not think that LR’s personal opinion of CW could have removed Anne’s deep love for him or much affected his perfections in her eyes—for seven years later she has still met no man his equal. Here is where I make a great leap of imagination to suppose that LR suggested the idea that the match was as bad for him as it was for her. I think Anne was persuaded that it would be a selfless act and she could not hold out against someone so loved and relied upon any longer. :) |
