If she is a widow, why not plainly say so? Lady Russell is a widow who apparently has no particular knowledge of "sailors". I wonder now if Mrs.Clay is even eligible to marry. With all their concern for rank and the honor of their family, this makes Sir Walter and Elizabeth's "persuasion" by Mrs. Clay more interesting. Her name isn't in Debrett's, is it?
