Thoughts and a question re: LR, Anne, and Bath   Written by Jace (9/20/2005 11:15 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Lady Russell and Bath, penned by Rae
Are you new?

1. I give kudos to JA's talent in capturing this very common and very human characteristic. We all have believed every now and then that a certain person should but naturally think and see things the way exactly we do. That what is good/bad for us is necessarily good/bad for the next person. That what we like are equally liked by those we love as well.

As this is quite a natural tendency for any person, I really don't take this against Lady Russell. Although I do agree that that is good evidence of the fact that Lady Russell does not always completely understand Anne. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if there's anyone who can and does in the succeeding chapters. :)

2. Also, I think it's possible that Lady Russell believes Anne to have been over whatever "mood" she was in the last two times she was in Bath, especially as they do not know each other's opinion, "either its constancy or its change, on the one leading point of Anne's conduct, for the subject was never alluded to". Lady Russell might be thinking that Anne, being over whatever heartbreak she had, and having forgotten whatever negative memories she might have associated with Bath in the past, might be able to actually enjoy Bath *now*.

Plus besides, Lady Russell believes Anne will benefit from a livelier society in Bath.

3. Which reminds me. It is said that:

[Lady Russell] had been repeatedly very earnest in trying to get Anne included in the visit to London... but always in vain...

In relation to what Maisy said below, if Lady had wanted Anne to be removed from Kellynch once in a while, why hadn't she invited Anne to go with *her* on her trips instead?

I can't imagine Lady Russell--who, to my mind, truly and dearly loves Anne--neglecting Anne, even if unintentionally. Can it just mean then that Anne, melancholy as she seems to be, just refuses Lady Russell's previous offers and declines to have a change in society?
