quite what kind of acquaintance it was! There's something upright about the adjective 'naval', and an admiral (though not in danger of upstaging a baronet) may still be considered gentlemanlike. The word 'Sailors', however, (at least from the mouth of Mrs Clay) seems to have a faintly suspect air to it. Many kinds of men were sailors, weren't they, Mrs Clay?
