It makes me wonder, had Lady Elliot not died, how she would have dealt with Anne's engagement at 19 to a man of little means. She is described as a woman of superior character, sensible and amiable. Perhaps, if she had dissuaded Anne, it would be easily accepted as normal anxiety for her daughter's wellbeing.
