surrogate mother to Anne, LR would take into consideration Lady Elliots own experience. It makes me wonder, had Lady Elliot not died, how she would have dealt with Anne's engagement at 19 to a man of little means. She is described as a woman of superior character, sensible and amiable. Perhaps, if she had dissuaded Anne, it would be easily accepted as normal anxiety for her daughter's wellbeing. On the other hand LR's interference, whether we think her right or wrong, is felt to be just that, interference.

I really enjoyed your 'Prequel' clues post.
