in consequence of the missive, Unreasonably discontented?, penned by Robbin
which states that Sir Walter chose to remain single after "having met with one or two private disappointments in very unreasonable applications" is very interesting as well. I wonder what was in those proposals that made them unreasonable. With his vanity, I can imagine him proposing to a much younger and beautiful woman, a higher ranking woman, or a very rich woman, and think himself in the right. Then again, Sir Walter seems to understand and believe in preserving rank so well, that I can't see him proposing to a woman of such a high rank that society would look on it as improper. He would seem to be too much aware of that himself. It is very interesting... |
