I wonder what was in those proposals that made them unreasonable. With his vanity, I can imagine him proposing to a much younger and beautiful woman, a higher ranking woman, or a very rich woman, and think himself in the right.

Then again, Sir Walter seems to understand and believe in preserving rank so well, that I can't see him proposing to a woman of such a high rank that society would look on it as improper. He would seem to be too much aware of that himself.
