Critical edition notes   Written by Barbara (9/19/2005 9:56 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, exertions of loyalty, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I am reading the Norton Critical edition, but a point in another thread made me look at the other critical edition of Persuasion I own--The Broadview Literary edition.

There is a note there that reads:

the first year of Charles II: that is, 1660. It is worth noting that of 864 baronets listed in Dugdale , no less than 159 had been created in 1660; Charles II clearly used the title of baronet to reward large numbers of those who had been loyal to the Stuart royal family during their exile 1649-1660. Names among those 159 include Darcy, Morland, Willoughby, Knightley, Bennet, and Croft.
