I think that there was feeling on his part, and, even if Lady E wasn't the "happiest of women," there must have been feeling on her part as well to do all the things that she did exclusively for HIM. By the time the story opens, Lady E has been dead for half of Anne's life, so feelings of grief would naturally have diminished for them all. Anne is the only one who speaks of her mother, and then just to Lady R.
