...but because of Sir Walter. We are told that "She had humoured, or softened, or concealed his failings, and promoted his real respectability for seventeen years."

It would be a lot easier to promote Sir Walter's respectablilty and conceal his failings if he never met the person, wouldn't it?

Knowing that this man would be heir after Sir Walter (as Lady Elliot at least must have realized when there was no baby in the past nine years), maybe it was in her interest to have him continue to think well of the family.
