...Lady Elliot would discourage contact with Mr Elliot. I'd always assumed Sir Walter saw no need to do so when he expected to produce a son at some date. He was just 40 when his wife died, though it had been nine years since the birth of Mary. Before then, it was every two years, like clockwork. hmmm...
