but Elizabeth too, are the centres of attention in chapter one - in comparison to Anne, who only gets a few brief mentions, and Mary, who gets hardly any at all. Doesn't it show you a lot about the importance of each person in the Kellynch family circle? Sir Walter, of course, is the prime person, being blessed with beauty and a baronetcy - followed by Miss Elliot, who gets almost as much.

Lady Russell gets a good mention, being a wealthy family friend, but she, Anne and Mary together get less space than Sir Walter on his own. Anne gets a couple of short paragraphs, and Mary, poor soul, is hardly spoken of at all, having moved out of the house completely.
