exertions of loyalty   Written by Barbara (9/19/2005 3:18 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, The Baronetage information..., penned by Robbin
Are you new?

One wonders, or at least I do, exactly what the 'exertions of loyalty' that resulted in the creation of a baronetcy involved? It could be that the family had done something that helped Charles II be restored to his throne. It could be that they just gave him some money to help him out. Or it could be that the title was given as a thank you in exchange for the favours of one of those 'Marys and Elizabeths'--Charles II rewarded some of his mistresses with titles, some of his numerous illegitimate children with titles, and in at least one case that I found, the husband of the mistress.

Of course that's pure conjecture, but still Sir Walter is all proud of something that he didn't even do in the first place, that happened more than a century earlier, and that may not have been something to be particularly proud of to begin with!
