But Jane Austen is at her sharp-tongued best here, I think. She skewers and deflates him so deliciously. He's a tyrant, but she holds him up to ridicule. I don't think she wanted us to like him or approve of anything he does - quite the opposite - but I do think she meant us to laugh at his expense.
