Are you new?

Mr. Shepherd's "interest was involved in the reality of Sir Walter's retrenching" - what exactly does this mean? Is he one of the creditors as well as the man of business? That would certainly be a hold on his client. Or maybe he's been taking large fees for his services for years and doesn't want the source of his income to dry up.
