determines conversational topics and narrows ones focus. I did some arithmetic and found out that since Mary married in 1810 that the two boys can't older than 2 and 3 at the most in ch 1.

So my point is that Mary did alter, mainly because of the children, whether it was her skin, her weight or her conversational topics or everything together.
