I had marked this line as well and wondered exactly what he was talking about. I'm leaning toward thinking it has something to do with bird hunting rights, which would have been spelled out in the lease and deputation.
But, if it is his worry that his bird population would be wiped out, he is safe with Admiral Croft, who "said he sometimes took out a gun, but never killed;" LOL!
Which brings up another question - was the Admiral just a bad shot, or did he go hunting just for the pleasure of shooting off his gun? ;-)
