But still, it's surprising to think that her mother, who wants nothing more in life than to see her daughters well married, would oppose any eligible offer, much less one from one of the wealthiest men in the country. I think Lizzy is afraid of occasioning any kind of hysteria that might be overheard by Darcy or even by the household servants, who would gossip about it, since that does seem to be the one consistent reaction Mrs. Bennet has shown.
