Most, indeed I'd ssay nearly all mothers of the tieme wnated to get their daughters married, rather than worrying whehter they were likely to be happy. Marriage was the only career for a woman, and at least gave soem security and status to a woman - and for Mrs B, her own status in her own mind depended on getting her girls settled.
I dont think that Mrs B is a very nice woman. She is seflish and vulgar and problaby she's more concerned for herslef in her wish to get the girls married... Ie partly from a "status" point of view and partly becuase if they're married she will problaby be in a better financial position than if she's a widow with no home, a small incoem and 5 single yougn women on her hands....But still, I find it hard to blame her for looking to her own interests to soem extent. And While she is to bblame for being extravagant, Mr B is evne more to blame. He refused to take responsiblity for making sure that they saved some money....when it was obvious that his wife wasn't willing/capalbe of doing so....
And she cna't hlep being stupid. She could be more kindly and amibale, but its not her fault that she hasn't much in teh way of brains...
and I think that some of her awfulness may be attributed to years of trying to cope with a husbnad who made fun of her and laughed at her genunienly based concerns for herself and the girls when he is gone...
