I'm still not entirely convinced that becoming part of a regiment guarding the king would count as a post at *court*, but this option never occurred to me before. Thanks for posting it!

As for why such officers were better paid, I imagine that guarding the sacred royal personage would be considered one of the most important jobs in the military, even if the SRP was already kept away from any danger! ;-)
