I can't find the darn reference now, but I remember reading in a commentary for "Emma" that in JA's day, hosts might invite a certain number to dinner, and then invite additional guests to come for coffee or tea about an hour *after* dinner. Perhaps that's where the crowd around the coffee and tea table (and the later card players) came from!
