I shouldn't think that it has much to do with his thinking of repaying Mr Gardiner.. I think that had it really been Mr G who had paid for Lydia's marriage, Mr B woudl have soon found a way of wriggling out of repaying.... He'd have decided that Mr G msut have beene able to afford it and it would be embarrassing to offer him money and so on. but I think his refusal to go to Newcastle has everyting to do with his disliking teh idea of seeing Lydia and Wickham any more than he has to...
