Charlotte, you remember, stated that spouses change after marriage, to the possible detriment of the other. I thnk JA means to tell us that change for the better should come before marriage, or you should not expect it to happen. Also, it has to come from within. Many characters in the book are "corrected" by others, but most do not change their ways.
