Reminds me slightly (getting into austenuations territory here...) of General Tilney taking as fact John Thorpe's idea that Catherine Morland was to fall into a lot of money being heir to the Allens. Lady Catherine took the rumor as high probability and was going to do all in her power from preventing it becoming a fact!
