Thanks for the exact citation, Roisin! I seem to remember someone posting that even in JA's day, referring to children as olive branches was considered old-fashioned and flowery. Earlier in the book, Mr. Collins uses an entirely different olive branch metaphor which has nothing to do with children (except in our appreciative imaginations!). I've linked some info on it below.
