she had some relations for whom there was no need to blush   Written by Stephanie (5/19/2010 3:14 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Darcy's progress, week 6, penned by gianni
Are you new?

Speaking of the Gardiners' chat with Mr. Darcy at Pemberley: it was pointed out to me that Elizabeth's view that Darcy was surprised at the connection might have been incorrect as to the cause. The surprise (which I do not think Elizabeth imagined) might have been because these genteel, well-spoken, pleasant people were MRS. BENNET'S RELATIONS. Surely, knowing some people descended from tradesman, and knowing Mrs. Bennet's complete lack of social sense and polite interaction, the more surprising revelation is not their livelihood, but rather their close relationship to that member of the Bennet family?

Mr. Darcy has another reason to thank the Gardiners, too. They were undoubtedly some of the outside matrimonial examples that Elizabeth's own household failed to give her of conjugal felicity. ;)
