that the guns they had in Jane Austen's day were not very efficient, so many birds escaped unscathed (making Mrs Bennet's suggestion that Bingley would be able to kill all of Netherfield's birds even more fatuous) and that the birds were at least eaten rather than being stuffed or skinned for trophies.
