...gives me a laugh because of the mention of an olive branch earlier in the book. Just as Mr. Collins offered his visit (and forgiveness of parental squabbles) as an olive branch (a "gift") to the Bennets, Mr. Bennet imagines (or sardonically describes) this child as a beneficent "gift" or "offering" from Mr. Collins to Charlotte. For some reason that parallel always breaks me up.
