Quite so, ...   Written by gianni (5/17/2010 2:25 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, In Chapter 54, did Darcy not say enough to deflect..., penned by Adrian
Are you new?

... I carelessly glossed over his two perfunctory responses to Lizzy's direct questions.

But, deflect? After standing silent for some time, he left when another girl spoke to Lizzy.

Likewise, at dinner, he was trapped beside Mrs. Bennet, and spoke seldom and coldly with her. Afterward, when the gentlemen joined the ladies, he provoked Lizzy's envy by speaking to others, made the two reponses you pointed out, and obviously had to speak to participate in the whist game.

So, again, I exaggerate his lack of speech. Thanks yet again; it's corrected in my personal copy.
