Chapter 58 -- Yet Another Proposal
At Lizzy's unexpected declaration of knowing about his role in Lydia's marriage, and her profound gratitude, Darcy repeats his proposal briefly, almost haltingly.
Upon her acceptance, they begin to talk. The dialog quoted shows him conversing freely, even easily, as he honestly discusses his former misbehavior, tracing his change of heart from her refusal to his realization that she was right in her criticisms, to his effort at Pemberley to show you, by every civility in my power, that I was not so mean as to resent the past; and I hoped to obtain your forgiveness, to lessen your ill opinion, by letting you see that your reproofs had been attended to.
He continues to discuss their situation, Bingley's situation, (Elizabeth could not help smiling at his easy manner of directing his friend), his confession to Bingley of having kept Jane's presence in London from him.
In anticipating the happiness of Bingley, which of course was to be inferior only to his own, he continued the conversation till they reached the house.
Chapter 59 -- At Longbourn
The acknowledged lovers talked and laughed, the unacknowledged were silent. Darcy was not of a disposition in which happiness overflows in mirth...
