Are you new?

I agree it's hard to pin down what JA meant by "fashion" in phrases like "people of fashion". I wonder if definition no.8 (!) in the 1812 edition of Johnson's Dictionary (thanks again, Graciela!) might be useful:

"Rank; Condition above the vulgur"

This reminds me of our first description of Mr. Hurst, who "merely looked the gentleman". I wonder if "fashion" meant that you could tell just by looking at someone that they were of a certain social class? That's my best guess, anyway.
