...IMO JA was not interested in describing a villain who really couldn't help himself (a compulsive liar, or someone who was powerless before his attraction to young girls, etc.). IMO, one of JA's main points was that most people can change for the better if they really want to; it's just that too many, like Wickham, simply don't want to! She described the harm that ordinary, everyday selfishness and greed can do.
Also, how many compulsive liars, as opposed to "liars of convenience", as Adrian puts it, do we really run into in everyday life? I certainly never have. Yet another thing I appreciate about JA is her skill at describing real life! :-)
