Just wondering: why would praise of Pemberley from Elizabeth be construed as mischievous? Because she sometimes 'professed opinions not her own'?
Would Elizabeth have been able to apologetically explain her presence at Pemberley had she not been out of earshot of her aunt and uncle? She does seem to wait for that moment, although she must have been wanting since she had first seen him to assure him she was not planning a meeting.
Now, we can see how Elizabeth, normally easy and unaffected, acts when embarrassed! She makes awkward small talk, and her natural arch speech and spirited imagination disappears! Poor Darcy, to lose the chance to hear her laughter, or to see her dancing eyes as she teased him or another, or to wonder what twist she would put on the topic of conversation this time!
