the probability of her being yet more imprudent [] at Brighton   Written by Stephanie (5/13/2010 11:24 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Lydia and the scene of the 'crime', Brighton, penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

I wonder how much of the background nuances were intended by Author Austen? I mean, I might write a story about, I dunno, Las Vegas, or someplace, and not be thinking about some famous dude who was well-known for keeping his mistress there. Or some critic might think I was referencing the legal prostitution, when all I was after was someplace that sounded likely, nearby enough to where I wrote the rest of the action.

Obviously, if Austen WANTED to reference the Prince Regent, she would have to be discreet. But could not Brighton simply be a well-known resort, far enough away from chaperons to allow Lydia her infamous indiscretion, close enough to be a destination?
