...the author of JaneInfo at this website (unfortunately I can't link it!) also felt that Chamberlayne was a member of the militia, plus I found a study guide to P&P online that also describes him as one of the militia. (I searched under "Chamberlayne + Pride + Prejudice".) Not to say your scenario is impossible, just that general opinion seems to be on the side of Chamberlayne being an officer. :-)
